I am really pleased that my family has finally caught the fishing bug! Today I took out my parents and brother out salmon fishing in Puget Sound. Resident Coho fishing in Seattle’s Marine Area 10 has been pretty good lately, and it was a perfect day to take my folks out. It was their first salmon fishing trip ever!
We launched at Shilshole at 6am and ran out to Jeff Head and found some really good signs. Plenty of bait on the sonar and a good number of salmon marks.
I love the learning aspect of taking out people that are experiencing something new. We had the trolling gear out for a few moments before the first fish on. I stayed away from the gear and let my folks and brother pop the line off the downrigger and fight the fish without too much help. We did lose a number of fish, but this was training day! Eventually, everyone got the program down and by the end of the trip, they all had full comprehension of how trolling with downriggers worked, how to release the line from the clip when a fish was on, and how to get fish into the net!
We landed our limit of 8 Resident Coho, all around that 3-4 pound range which is common for this time of the season, and probably hooked and lost just as many.
I felt fortunate that my family’s first day of salmon fishing on Puget Sound was a success! Ready for many more family days!
