Washington State shellfish managers have been busy on our coastal beaches counting Razor Clam populations. And based on record breaking clam densities, 2020 is shaping up to give us the best digging and most openers in anyone’s memory!
How Washington State’s Razor Clam Seasons are Determined
Surveys are done throughout the summer months to figure out just how many Razor Clams are out there on our Pacific Beaches. They found a bunch of them! They say that it’s enough to schedule openers on pretty much every day that has tides that are low enough to access them!
The season’s clamming dates are scheduled, and then the state continuously monitor marine toxin levels to ensure that it is safe to send people out harvesting. Because of this monitoring, it’s important to check the WDFW Razor Clam Seasons and Beaches Page to guarantee that the tentative dates are approved for digging. Marine Toxin Levels rarely are high enough to cancel a tentative dig. But hey, it is 2020. It’s been a wild year all the way around, so you never know! Always check the site before heading out to the coast.
Safety In The Age Of Covid-19
State Shellfish Managers cancelled many of our 2020 spring digs due to the uncertainty and threat of Covid-19 spread. This year they will be working diligently to provide us a generous Razor Clam season, while protecting the safety of the public.
They are encouraging everyone to continue to practice social distancing, wear masks, stay home if not feeling well, along with other guidelines.
